Health and Child Care Minister Dr Obadiah Moyo told HealthTimes that the response to the call for applications was overwhelming.

“Then the issue of the CEO there are people who have applied and we are going to be conducting interviews soon,” he said.

Government has since requested organisations even those in the HIV sector to submit their applications. Six people from the sector submitted their names pending appointment to the board.

Dr Moyo said the selection would be done in line with the NAC Act.

“We have made requests to the various organisations who have to submit names in line with the act. We have to move in line with the act. It cannot be just a random selection. The various groups involved have to submit,” he said.

NAC Act Section 3 reads, “ Before the President makes an appointment under paragraph (c) or (d) of subsection (2), the Minister shall—             (a)        request the council or society concerned to nominate such number of persons as the Minister may specify who are suitable and available for appointment as members of the Board;  and

(b)        forward to the President the names of any persons nominated in response to a request in terms of paragraph (a), together with any recommendations the Minister may wish to make in the matter.”

Government in March dissolved the board with immediate effect, barely a year after its appointment.

Mrs Samkange was acting chairperson since December last year, a position she assumed following the resignation of Dr Everisto Marowa.
